Intro to mental health

Understanding emotional wellness in dance, breaking down stigmas, recognizing early warning signs, and accessing trusted support networks.

Why Mental Health Matters in Dance

Dancers are artistic athletes who combine high physical demands with deep emotional expression. The pressure to maintain peak physical conditioning, master technical perfection, and handle audition feedback can take a toll on your emotional health.

Taking care of your mind is just as important as conditioning your body. Mental health exists on a continuum—from feeling thriving and balanced, to experiencing temporary stress, all the way to severe crisis or burnout.

Common Signs You Might Need Support

  • Persistent feelings of anxiety, dread, or panic before rehearsals or performances.
  • Difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, or chronic physical exhaustion.
  • Harmful self-talk or feeling like your worth is solely tied to dance achievements.
  • Loss of joy or interest in movement and social connections.
